Stem Cell & PRP Therapy

Stem cell and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy are highly effective treatments that leverage the body’s natural healing ability.

Known as orthobiologic treatments, both types of therapy can be used for healing from injuries and for the repair of damaged tissues. For many patients, these safe and effective treatments are a preferable alternative to prescription drugs and surgery.

PRP and stem cell therapy are similar in theory, but used in different ways for different purposes. At Rising Health Specialty Clinic in Salt Lake City, stem cell therapy and PRP are just two of the integrative medicine treatments we use to help our patients achieve their goals for healing and pain relief.

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy

Platelet-rich plasma therapy concentrates the patient’s own platelets to stimulate healing. Platelets are blood cells that contain growth factors, which are integral to the healing process.

Treatment begins with drawing a small quantity of the patient’s blood. After being placed in a centrifuge, the whole blood is separated into layers of platelets, red blood cells, white blood cells and plasma. The platelets and white cells are placed back into the centrifuge to isolate the platelets. Finally, a small amount of plasma is added to the platelets, creating injectable PRP.

When injected into the damaged area, PRP acts as a jumpstart, stimulating the body’s natural tissue repair response.

PRP is injected based on the nature and type of injury to be treated. For example, this therapy can be highly effective for the treatment of plantar fasciitis, tennis elbow, tendonitis, muscle strains, and more. It can also be used in a variety of other applications, depending on the needs and goals of the patient.

Stem Cell Therapy

This treatment uses cells taken from the patient’s own bone marrow. Stem cells derived from adult bone marrow have the ability rebuild damaged body tissues. Like PRP therapy, a concentrated injection of stem cells works to initiate the body’s natural healing response while also triggering cell regeneration.

Stem cells become inactive in the body after birth; however, they reactivate when the body encounters injury or disease. For more severe injuries or chronic conditions, however, this natural regenerative process is often insufficient. By extracting stem cells, concentrating them and injecting them into the affected area, providers can trigger a more aggressive level of natural healing.
